Women’s IPL: Meg Lanning, Charlotte Edwards want BCCI to start IPL-like tournament for women

New Delhi: Captains of women’s cricket power houses, England and Australia, want the BCCI to start the female version of the Indian Premier League on the lines of the newly-launched Women’s Big Bash League. England captain Charlotte Edwards and Australia captain Meg Lanning said an IPL will be a big boost for women’s cricket. Cricket Australia launched the Women’s Big Bash League (WBBL) last year and the England board will organise the Women’s Super League in the summer. “We would really like to see an IPL and even Indian players playing in the Super League and WBBL. It will be great for our game. You have seen what IPL has done for the men’s game, it will be fantastic for women’s cricket if it happens,” said Edwards here today. Lanning called the launch of Super League in England another step in the right direction for women’s cricket and now wants the Indian board (BCCI) to come up with an IPL.

“Super League is another great step forward for the women’s game. Girls are interested in playing as well. WBBL was great for the game. An IPL will be fantastic. India have made serious improvements in the last few years. Hope Super League works well and you never know what can happen from there,” added Lanning. Talking of Lanning, she had earlier said that spin will play a crucial role in Women’s T20 World Cup 2016. “Obviously spin is going play the major part in games. We have been doing a lot of work on playing spin bowling. We can adopt in the little period we have got since arriving here. We are almost used to the Chennai conditions but in all venues we have to rise our game.”
