Kolkata Knight Riders all-rounder Yusuf Pathan was given out obstructing the field while batting against Pune Warriors India on Wednesday. This is the first instance of a batsman being given out in the six editions of Indian Premier League (IPL).

According to the Law 37.1 Obstructing the Field (Wilful Obstruction) “Either Batsman, on appeal, shall be out Obstructing the Field if he wilfully obstructs the opposite side by word or action.”

The Umpires must decide whether the obstruction was wilful or accidental. The accidental interception of a throw-in by a Batsman while running does not break this Law.

In the 18th over of the match, Pathan dug out a yorker from Wayne Parnell. The batsmen quickly attempted to sneak single. Running towards the non-striker’s end, Pathan attempted to push the ball away with his foot before the bowler could grab it and hit towards the stumps.

After due consultation, the on-field umpires, Nigel Llong and K Srinath it was concluded that Pathan had wilfully kicked the ball and thus was adjudged out obstructing the field.
