Sir Garfield ‘Garry’ Sobers, the greatest all-rounder cricketing world has ever seen, turned 80 on Wednesday. To mark this occasion, not just the Caribbean islands, but the entire cricket fraternity came together to celebrate their beloved cricketer’s birthday. The match, organised by Barbados Cricket Association (BCA), was played in honour of his birthday at the Kensington Oval. It was held between Sir Gary Sobers XI (led by Carl Hooper) and the Brian Lara XI (captained by Lara) and was played under the lights. Sir Vivian Richards and Sir Clive Lloyd were the managers for the teams.

A number of legends besides Lara and Hooper participated in the match as Sir Curtly Ambrose, Courtney Walsh, Collis King, Sherwin Campbell and Philo Wallace were also present on the occasion. This highly anticipated match was one of a number of events held during the ‘Sir Garry: 80 Not Out Season of Celebration’, which took place from July 3rd to July 31st. Also Read: West Indies legend Garry Sobers turns 80: Twitter reactions

Reportedly, Ravi Shastri, Arjuna Ranatunga, Wasim Akram, Tatenda Taibu, Rashid Latif and Andrew Flintoff were among the several visiting players invited for the match. However, it cannot be confirmed whether they attended the event or not. We present to you some images from the gala evening, which saw a host of luminaries turn out at the gathering.
