England Women beat Australia Women in the first Women’s Ashes One-Day International (ODI) at the County Ground in Taunton on Tuesday, gaining a 1-0 lead in the three-match series. Australia finished on a score of 238 for the loss of nine wickets at the end of 50 overs, before England chased the target down with 26 balls to spare. All-rounder Elyse Perry top-scored for the Australians with a score of 78 off 96, and propelled her team with a 121-run partnership for the fourth wicket with Alex Blackwell (58 off 84 balls). The hosts, on the other hand, lost early wickets but were consolidated by half-centuries from Lydia Greenway (53 off 70 balls) and Natalie Sciver (66 off 75 balls), with the pair adding 122 for the fifth wicket to take their side out of a perilous situation to the gates of victory. There were impressive performances with the ball from either teams as well. Katherine Brunt was the pick among the English bowlers with figures of 10-2-48-3. Brunt had caused the initial damage, removing openers Elyse Villani and Jess Jonassen as the visitors had collapsed to 25 for two. Despite the impetus provided by Perry and Blackwell, followed by vital contributions from Jess Cameron (23 off 22 balls) and wicketkeeper-batter Alyssa Healy (29 off 25 balls), the Australians lost too many wickets towards the latter stages of their innings.
